Spreading Peace Through the Journey and the Song

When we think about the peace movement of the 1960s, two things instantly come to mind: hitting the open road to explore the world and listening to acoustic guitars strumming anthems of unity. Music and travel were the heartbeats of that era. They brought strangers together in fields and concert halls, breaking down walls and proving that we are all connected.

Today, spreading peace doesn’t require packing up a VW bus and dropping out of society. Just like that rooftop garden in the heart of Toronto, we can bring that exact same spirit of adventure, connection, and harmony into our everyday lives using travel and music.

Here is how travel and music can help us spread peace today:

  • Travel with curiosity, not just as a tourist: Exploring new places—whether it is taking a cross-country train, visiting a neighboring town, or flying across the globe—teaches us to respect different cultures. When we travel with an open mind and a reusable water bottle, we tread lightly on the earth and build bridges with people who live differently than we do.
  • Let music be the common language: A great song has the power to unite people instantly, crossing language and cultural barriers just like it did decades ago. Whether you are sharing a playlist online, discovering independent artists, or strumming a tune in your local park, music reminds us of our shared humanity.
  • Support local and sustainable sounds: Today, independent musicians and local festivals build real community. Supporting creators who sing about unity and environmental care turns a simple melody into a movement of positive change.

Peace isn’t some distant dream from the past; it is a journey we take every day. By exploring the world with kindness and letting music lift our spirits, we can keep the dream of peace alive right where we are.

Travel also allows us to see beyond stereotypes and surface differences. When we connect with local people, share meals, listen to stories, or participate in traditions, we realize that many of our feelings—hope, fear, longing, and joy—are universal. These shared emotions help us recognize that, despite our cultural differences, we are all part of the same human family.

By exploring what we have in common, we can see how we’re connected and how we belong. These connections remind us that we are not alone in our feelings and struggles. Embracing our shared humanity fosters understanding, kindness, and a sense of community—building bridges that unite us all.
